Because I don’t exist independently of others–only interdependently–my notions of the Divine cannot be about Me relating to It or It blessing Me. When I’m able to see clearly, I discern that spiritual life is primarily lived out through my interactions with others. It’s not glamorous, but at least it acknowledges what is true: connection. If I zoom the lens in or out just a hair from the way I usually discern myself as a unit, I marvel at being connected to or hosting or enveloped within countless other living things.
The urgent, sacred nature of these relational efforts are clearest with my daughter. In fact, if I get it mostly right in this area alone, I will consider myself a success!
